Leaky Gut, Explained
"Leaky gut" gets used a lot in wellness spaces. This page explains what the term means, what it doesn't mean, and how our nutrition and lifestyle programs approach gut-lining support — in plain, educational language.
What "leaky gut" refers to
"Leaky gut" is a popular term for increased intestinal permeability. The lining of your gut acts like a selective barrier — it lets nutrients through and keeps much of what's inside your digestive tract from passing into the body. In some people, that barrier can become more permeable than usual, letting more through than it ideally would. Researchers have studied intestinal permeability in a number of digestive and inflammatory contexts.
Why it isn't a formal diagnosis
Here's the part that matters: "leaky gut" is not a standalone medical diagnosis. There's no single, widely used clinical test that says "you have leaky gut," and it isn't listed as a disease on its own. It's more of a descriptive concept — a way of talking about how the gut barrier might be behaving — than a condition your doctor would hand you on a chart. If a provider uses the term, they're usually describing a pattern, not making a formal diagnosis.
That doesn't mean the symptoms people associate with it aren't real. Bloating, fatigue, food sensitivities, and general discomfort are genuine experiences. It means the label itself isn't a diagnosis, and it shouldn't be used as one.
What can affect the gut barrier
A range of everyday factors can influence how the gut lining behaves: diet quality and the mix of foods you eat, fiber intake, alcohol, stress, sleep, certain medications, and the balance of microbes living in the gut. The barrier tends to respond to the overall pattern of how you live — not just one food or one day.
How our programs approach it
Because the gut barrier responds to the whole pattern, our programs don't chase a single "fix." They focus on the foundations: real-food meals, steady daily habits, stress awareness, sleep, and — when it makes sense — supplement guidance selected to support gut-lining nutrition and normal digestion. It's a supportive, layered approach rather than a quick remedy.
